- Abstract (EN)
- In Europe and in Northern America animal testing for regulatory purposes of plant protection products (PPP) should be undertaken only as a last resort. In several other regions still only animal tests are accepted. Therefore, there is a need to improve the acceptance of alternative methods for PPP as chemical mixtures. The last decades there has been significant advances in toxicological sciences that have improved our understanding of mechanisms underpinning adverse health effects, mainly based, and validated through single chemicals. In vitro studies are accepted as alternatives in Europe and Northern America, primarily. This analysis showed that “simple” toxicological endpoints for skin and eye irritation/corrosion can be reliably predicted by applying relatively straight forward in vitro testing strategies. Whereas, more complex toxicological endpoints, such as skin sensitization need more flexible integrated testing strategies tailored to specific chemical product types and integrating and combining different existing data and information.
